May el-Toukhy's post-war drama wins the 83rd Venice Film Festival's top prize, with lead actress Mathilde Arcel also taking the Volpi Cup for Best Actress. The film follows a Danish housemaid in summer 1945 concealing an intimate relationship with a German soldier. El-Toukhy is only the eighth woman to win the Golden Lion, and the sole female director in this year's main competition. The double win was possible because the Maggie Gyllenhaal-led jury voted unanimously for the Golden Lion, allowing the same film's lead to receive an acting prize.
