Fatih Akin's Geister (Ghost Song), a 106-minute German production starring Mariam Dawoud and Eren M. Güvercin, will open the 74th San Sebastián International Film Festival on 18 September as a world premiere in competition for the Golden Shell. The film follows two twenty-year-olds who fall in love at a graduation party; she dies that night but returns to meet him in his dreams for forty nights. It is Akin's first time competing for San Sebastián's top prize with a feature; he took the Golden Bear at Berlin for Head-On in 2004, the Best Screenplay Award at Cannes for The Edge of Heaven in 2007, and the Special Jury Prize at Venice for Soul Kitchen in 2009. German theatrical release is set for 5 November.
