Two films backed by Mitteldeutsche Medienfoerderung (MDM), the funder for Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, won awards at Venice 2026. Ilya Khrzhanovsky's "DAU," a German-French-Swedish co-production 20 years in the making about a physicist drawn into Soviet weapons research, won the Silver Lion for Best Director. The production received support from MDM, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Eurimages, and the Swedish Film Institute. Alina Marazzi's "Das Maedchen mit der Leica," an Italian-German co-production from Vivo Film and Komplizen Film that shot in Leipzig, Halle and Merseburg, won the 1964 Pop Art Award and the Pasinetti Special Prize. Both films received DFFF funding.
