The United Kingdom and Canada signed an updated co-production treaty at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 14, 2026. The agreement, signed by UK Creative Industries Minister Ian Murray and Canadian Minister Marc Miller, gives UK-Canadian co-productions equivalent treatment to domestic productions in both territories, unlocking access to local funding, tax incentives, and distribution rights. BFI Deputy Chief Executive Harriet Finney called the treaty "more user-friendly" and noted it "recognises the major shifts we've seen in our sector, where building finance for new film and television projects now regularly requires numerous partners and territories."
