Germany's ZDF Tests AI Subtitles for Live Streams

German public broadcaster ZDF is trialling AI subtitling for online-only formats such as "ZDFheute live" and sports events, and already uses AI-assisted audio description on "Terra X" and "einfach Mensch", with documentary titles to follow by 2028, under a roadmap called "Access 2028" that makes subtitles the rule for all new content. Subtitled event livestreams are to be standard from the end of 2027, program trailers on TV and streaming get subtitles from early 2027, and "Der Bergdoktor", "Die Bergretter" and "Markus Lanz" add German Sign Language versions next year.
